As far back as 1830 a Tavern named Swiss Cottage stood on its present site at the junctions of Avenue Road, Finchley Road and Eton Avenue. The junction and its immediate vicinity were named Swiss Cottage after the tavern which later became a pub when it was purchased by one of its many previous owners. CitiRental has been based close to the pub for many years which provided a welcome after hours ‘watering hole’ in the summer months for our staff!
Built in 1936, the design and appearance of the Swiss Cottage Odeon was intended to be similar to many other Odeon and Gaumont cinemas around the UK. The design accomplished what the architects intended, to be landmark cinema standing out from the surround buildings. This cinema cost £58,000 to build (£9 million in today’s money) with seating for over 2,000 cinema goers. The Swiss Cottage Odeon remains, externally, unaltered since it was built. CitiRental use it as a landmark telling customers “We are next door to the Odeon cinema”
This is possibly one of London’s most iconic buildings. Designed by Sir Basil Spence; Swiss Cottage Library was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 10 NOV 1964 and remarkably took only about 18 months to build due to its modular construction. Also included on the same site is the Swiss Cottage sports centre. Citi Rental use the library as a location aid telling customers “We are opposite the Swiss Cottage Library”
Boasting 2 swimming pools (one Olympic size) and one of the largest gyms in London, Swiss Cottage leisure centre is built on two floors together with a large selection of classes from Acrobatics to Zumba.
The leisure centre shares the same site as Swiss Cottage Library and is located opposite CitiRental. The centre is close to the tube station for easy access from all areas.
Regency Car Park is located opposite the library and is notable for being the only car park in Swiss Cottage and the penultimate one before the Congestion Zone. It shares facilities with other notable businesses such as ourselves, Kar Dok and United Leasing. Built below the grade II listed Regency Lodge, it has two entrances: One on Avenue Road and the other on Finchley Road, both next door to the Odeon Cinema.
On our other location guides we give some information here on directions (eg St John’s Wood to CitiRental), but since we are located in Swiss Cottage, and it’s a relatively small area, it’s probably better to focus on some general information that might be useful: Rest assured that getting to CitiRental is fairly straightforward. There are several bus routes, and then there is of course the Swiss Cottage underground station (on the Jubilee line) which is just a moment’s walk from our premises.
